Middle-aged daughter hasn’t left the nest

Dear Abby: My husband passed away two years ago. I hope you can give me some advice on how to deal with my 53-year-old daughter who never left home. We generally get along well. She does freelance art, but doesn’t earn much. She contributes only $30 a month. Also, she has a driving phobia, so she doesn’t drive. She expects me to drive her to various places.

Meet the seven new Texans in Congress

WASHINGTON — Texas’ seven freshly elected members of Congress run the ideological gamut, from impassioned conservatives to some of the most progressive members ever sent from Texas. The new members will be in Washington for the next few days for freshman orientation, where they will learn the ins and outs of legislating — and how to be reliable foot soldiers for their parties.

I almost let a Shackleford presentation slip by last Thursday. Signing in, there was Qing Lana Luo presenting “Trends in Sustainable Park Development.” The licensed Landscape Architect and OSU Extension Specialist teaches design classes and has herself designed urban parks, plazas, and streetscapes.

Texas History Minute: Leader of Texas Revolution, early Republic Jose Antonio Navarro

The Navarro family played an important role in the early, formative years of Texas. Angel Navarro was an important early political leader in San Antonio, service that paved the way for his son. Jose Antonio Navarro, a leader of the Texas Revolution and in the early Republic of Texas, was inspired for a life of service by his father. In turn, he would inspire his own children and citizens across the state.

Sherman FFA off to great start

The Sherman FFA has been busy over the past month with students attending events all over the area and taking home top awards. Most recently, the Sherman Beef Cattle team competed in the Tioga FFA Fall Classic at Denison, which raked in two first place awards and one second place.
