Weight training still provides benefits for those over 50

Dear Dr. Roach: I’m a 75-year-old female in excellent health. I either walk or exercise daily with fitness videos that are great and provide a lot of body science along the way. The only thing I’m unsure about is that the video instructor doesn’t believe in using weights, and feels that using and raising our arms, legs, etc., will offer enough weight for those of us over 50. However, most fitness articles say that using weights is essential for all ages, especially for the elderly. I’ve used 2- and 5-pound weights in the past for walking and exercise, but even those are uncomfortable. I’ve always had very strong legs but not much upper body strength. What’s the best advice?

“The place to live is Bottom, Okla., the jewel of the map.” The Bennington Tribune January 14, 1915 Bottom, also called Bottom Falls, was indeed described as a friendly community with plenty of social events and activities. There were parties, musical entertainments, spelling bees, card parties, dances and weddings. There were school gatherings and church services. But where exactly was Bottom Falls? Where were its boundaries? Who was counted among its residents? That is the mystery.

Denison ISD school year off to a great start!

More than 750 Denison ISD teachers and staff members welcomed thousands of excited Denison children back to school on August 11th, quickly calming first-day nerves with big smiles, warm hugs, highfives and helping hands. Dr. David Kirkbride, in his inaugural year as DISD Superintendent, called the district’s first full week of school “an exciting time for all of us as we begin the new year with a focus on honoring the past, embracing the future, and inspiring everyone to do and be their best.”
