Bryan County History: African American churches and ministers of Native American Territory

It is clear from the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist records that religion was an important part of life for all the races that inhabited early Oklahoma. There were many missionaries who were active in the region, trying to convert both Native Americans and former enslaved people. Dr. Cyrus Kingsbury was one of those who worked tirelessly throughout Native American Territory. He kept a journal and in 1853 wrote: “Went to see an old colored brother, Dennis Folsom. He is, we think, near death.”

National Hispanic Institute brings Texas Lorenzo De Zavala Youth Legislative Session to Austin College

Organization inspiring top Latino high school students to become civic-minded leaders launches largest slate of immersive programs since pandemic started Continuing on its mission to bring immersive, in-person leadership education experiences to top Latino high school students to develop the next generations of Latino leaders, the National Hispanic Institute is holding its flagship Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session to Sherman, Texas, and Austin College this week, July 10 to July 17. The Texas LDZ brings together 150 students, primarily from Texas, but also from Oklahoma, Mexico and Panama, in a program celebrating its 40th year, maintaining its innovative approach to public policy education with wide-ranging applications and community building among its high school participants.

Good Morning: What is horror?

What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet? What about horror? Would it be just as scary if we called it by any other name? That’s a question I’ve been thinking over the last day after a conversation over labels and movie genres. The conversation started while I was on assignment covering a meeting that had gone into a closed executive session.
