Killing of Dom Phillips, Bruno Pereira the embodiment of assault on environmental defenders

The killing of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira in the Amazon is devastating for their families and friends. It is also the embodiment of a wider assault on environmental defenders and those who work with them, and of the dangers faced by journalists. The relentless targeting of those who seek to protect an ever more fragile world is increasing as the climate crisis grows more intense. In 2020, more than four defenders a week died globally. A disproportionate number are Indigenous people or, like Mr. Pereira, those who work closely with and for them. Mr. Phillips, though passionate about the environment, was not an activist but a reporter – one of many who have died in Latin America because of their work.

GC Jail expansion moves forward

In December, Grayson County commissioners approved spending $140,000 on a needs assessment for the county jail. Tuesday, commissioners approved an amendment between the county and Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects to go beyond the study to full-design services for the expansion of the jail.

Post hip surgery, one leg is shorter than the other

Dear Dr. Roach: Four years ago, my wife had hip surgery caused by a fall. About eight months after the surgery, she noticed her left leg was 3 inches shorter that her right one. Her doctor agreed it was shorter and said that does happen frequently. She must use a cane to walk and is now in a lot of pain just walking in a market or around the house. Is it common for this type of disability to be caused by hip surgery? Is there any type of procedure to correct it? What can be done to alleviate the pain and discomfort from this injury?
