SAN ANTONIO – Royce Freeman rushed for three touchdowns, leading the West to a 28-6 victory over the East in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday.


Van Alstyne senior Connor Mayes played on the West squad. Mayes played on the offensive line and also had an assisted tackle on defense in the third quarter.


Mayes has verbally committed to the University of Minnesota, where he will join his brother, Alex, who signed last year with the Gophers.


Jerrod Heard of Denton Guyer rushed eight times for 63 yards for the West, and KD Cannon of Mount Pleasant also caught three passes for 65 yards.


The West took a 14-0 halftime lead on scoring runs by Freeman and Joe Mixon.
