WYLIE — Denison’s Laura Martinez and Skye Johnson qualified for the state powerlifting meet after reaching the weight requirements with third-place finishes at the Division I Region 6 meet on Saturday.

WYLIE — Denison’s Laura Martinez and Skye Johnson qualified for the state powerlifting meet after reaching the weight requirements with third-place finishes at the Division I Region 6 meet on Saturday.


The duo will compete at the state meet at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi on March 14-15.


Martinez had a total of 545 pounds for third place in the 97-pound weight class while Johnson took third at 105 pounds with a total of 580 pounds.


Bailey Bridges finished fifth at 198 pounds with a combined total of 695 pounds as the Lady Yellow Jackets placed 12th in the team standings.


Division III Reg. 6


LEONARD — More than a dozen area lifters qualified for state and Whitesboro captured the region title at Leonard on Saturday.


The Lady Bearcats totaled 60 points, which was 42 more than runner-up Bowie. Leonard was fifth with 14 points, a point in front of S&S, while Collinsville was seventh and Bells was eighth.


Whitesboro’s Ashely Griffin was the region champ at 97 points with a total of 525 while Chole Keating of Bells was the runner-up at 505 pounds and Pottsboro’s Shelby Dodson also qualified for state in third with 495 pounds.


Whitesboro’s Terilyn Bufkin was the region champion at 105 pounds with a total of 545 pounds. Teammate Judi Carter advanced to state with a runner-up finish at 114 points with a total of 585 pounds.


S&S’ Townsend Jambor was the region champion at 123 pounds with a total of 730 pounds.


Whitesboro’s Madison Slaughter was the region champion at 132 pounds with a total of 790 pounds. Teammate Savannah Crowe advanced to state with a runner-up finish at 148 pounds with a total of 755 pounds.


Whitesboro took the top two spots at 165 pounds. Beck Morris won the region title at 820 pounds while Kaylin Miller was second with 740 pounds.


The Lady Bearcats had the top three spots at 181 pounds. Mikayla Pokorny was the region champ with 705 pounds while Kaylen Jowitt edged Taylor Brown, 660 to 650 pounds, for a spot at state.


Leonard’s McKenzie Crossland advanced to state with a runner-up finish at 198 pounds with a total of 725 pounds.


Collinsville’s Abbey Williams advanced to state as the runner-up in 220-plus pounds with a total of 845 pounds.
