CORPUS CHRISTI — Denison’s Skye Johnson and Laura Martinez each posted top-12 finishes at the Class 4A state powerlifting meet at the American Bank Center on Saturday.

CORPUS CHRISTI — Denison’s Skye Johnson and Laura Martinez each posted top-12 finishes at the Class 4A state powerlifting meet at the American Bank Center on Saturday.


Martinez, a freshman, placed ninth with a total of 540 pounds in the 97- pound weight class and was 15 pounds from climbing to sixth place. She had the second-best deadlift in her weight class at 275 pounds, just five pounds behind champion Marissa Ruiz of Gregory-Portland.


Johnson, a junior, was 12th with a total of 530 pounds in the 105-pound weight class.


Class 3A


Anna’s Danielle Gonzales lifted a total of 1,065 pounds to earn the state championship at 181 pounds at the 3A meet on Saturday.


Gonzales had the top totals across the board in her weight class (425 squat, 250 bench, 390 deadlift) and had a 130-pound margin over runner-up Marissa Hinojosa of Pleasanton.


Teammate Jordan Miller was 13th at 105 pounds with a total of 525 pounds and the Lady Coyotes finished eighth in the standings.


Bonham’s Jessica Smith was the state runner-up, taking second at 97 pounds with a total of 610 pounds, while teammate Audrey Richardson was 11th at 220 pounds with a total of 755 pounds.


Melissa’s Priscilla Adejokun placed sixth at 198 pounds with a total of 865 pounds.


Class 2A


Whitesboro’s Madison Slaughter was the runner-up in the 2A state meet, taking second at 132 pounds with a total of 800 pounds. She was 15 pounds behind champion Sierra Paredez of San Angelo Grape Creek and had the best bench total in the weight class at 185 pounds.


The Lady Bearcats had a pair of top-10 finishes at 165 pounds — Becky Morris was seventh with 805 pounds and Kaylin Miller was 10th at 755 pounds. Terilyn Bufkin took ninth at 105 pounds with a total of 570 pounds, Savannah Crowe was ninth at 148 pounds with a total of 775 pounds, Mikayla Pokorny was 10th at 181 pounds with a total of 765 pounds, Judi Carter was 15th at 114 pounds with a total of 605 pounds and Kaylen Jowitt was 16th at 181 pounds with a total of 655 pounds as Whitesboro had the best showing of a Region 6 team, placing 13th overall.


Townsend Jambor of S&S was fourth at 123 pounds with a total of 775 pounds, just 25 pounds out of first place.


Leonard’s McKenzie Crossland was eighth at 198 pounds with a total of 705 pounds while teammate Tenasha Ballard was 12th at 220 pounds with a total of 735 pounds.


Chloe Keating of Bells was 11th at 97 pounds with a total of 515 pounds and teammate Taylor Metz was 14th at 220-plus pounds with a total of 800 pounds.


Pottsboro’s Shelby Dodson took 13th at 97 pounds with a total of 510 pounds.


Class 1A


Blue Ridge’s Bre Rushing came away with third place at the 1A state meet after lifting a total of 795 pounds in the 220 pound weight class.


The Lady Tigers also got a fourth-place finish from Paige Albert at 220-plus pounds with a total of 870 pounds. Blue Ridge had the best showing of a Region 6 team, finishing in 20th place.


Collinsville had a pair of fifth-place efforts — Michelle Moore was fifth at 105 pounds with a total of 530 pounds and Abbey Williams matched that at 220-plus pounds with a total of 865 pounds.


Celeste’s Katelynn Clark was fifth at 97 pounds with a total of 465 pounds, Anne Rouleau took sixth with 605 pounds in the 132-pound weight class, Hannah Lipsey took seventh at 198 pounds with a total of 695 pounds and Madison Minter was eighth at 114 pounds with a total of 480 pounds.


Honey Grove’s Jada Redd finished eighth at 181 pounds with a total of 690 pounds.
