CROWLEY — Sherman’s girls led the way at the Crowley ISD Spring Fling on Friday as Maranda Kahl and Sarah Walker won a co-championship in girls A doubles in the weather-shortened tennis tournament.

CROWLEY — Sherman’s girls led the way at the Crowley ISD Spring Fling on Friday as Maranda Kahl and Sarah Walker won a co-championship in girls A doubles in the weather-shortened tennis tournament.


Kahl and Walker beat a team from Burleson 8-0, a team from Aledo 8-0, and the top seed from Granbury 6-1, 0-6, 10-8 to reach the finals against Keller. But the rain hit, the championship match was suspended, and Kahl and Walker were declared co-champions.


In girls B doubles, Diana and Susana Beltran took fourth place after beating a team from Weatherford 8-0, a team from Burleson Centennial 8-1, and a team from Dallas Kimball 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinals. They then lost to Keller 6-3, 6-1 and Aledo 6-0, 3-0, with the remainder of the last match suspended.


In girls A singles, Alex Mazzant of Sherman took second place in the consolation bracket after losing her first match. Mazzant won her next three matches before falling to Crowley’s Annika Burkhardt 1-6, 6-3, 10-5.


Next up for the tennis Bearcats is a dual match on Tuesday at McKinney North in a warm-up for the District 13-4A tournament, which will be held April 7-8 at Eldorado Country Club in McKinney.
