DENISON — It took just his second season to get the Yellow Jackets back to the top of the district standings but for Chad Rogers, it was a season too long.

Rogers arrived in Denison and the Jackets went 2-8 — the first time in his 12-year career he finished with a losing record.

Denison tripled its win total in 2013, including a victory in the Battle of the Ax, gained a share of the District 13-4A title and a playoff berth, all firsts since a state semifinal appearance in 2009, before finishing 6-5 with a bi-district loss to Sulphur Springs.

"It’s a tribute to our kids, the buying-in factor and what you’re trying to accomplish," Rogers said. "It’s a credit to the assistant coaches as well. There’s a lot of positive stuff, a lot of success."

The Jackets started the season 0-2 but jumped from sixth place in the standings the year prior and finished one victory shy of the seven wins by the program from 2010-12.

For his efforts, Rogers has been named the Herald Democrat All-Texomaland Class 3A-4A Coach of the Year.
