Nearly two dozen area swimmers qualified for the Class 4A Region III meet with strong performances at the District 10-4A meet at Austin College on Saturday.

Nearly two dozen area swimmers qualified for the Class 4A Region III meet with strong performances at the District 10-4A meet at Austin College on Saturday.


The top six finishers in each event will compete for a spot in the state meet at the Frisco Natatorium on Friday and Saturday.


Denison’s Tori Fryar will try for her third trip to state after claiming district titles in both the 200 freestyle (1:58.97) and the 500 freestyle (5:16.27).


Teammate Davis Looney also won those same two events on the boys side, winning the 200 free in 1:52.20 and the 500 free in 4:59.30.


The Lady Jacket medley relay of Ariel Haskett, Haeleigh Morgan, Fryar and Martha Hayes had a third-place finish and the 200 free relay of Haskett, Rayni Norris, Fryar and Hayes was the district runner-up in 1:57.56.


Hayes advanced with third place finishes in two events, the 200 free (2:17.81) and the 100 free (1:01.06) while Norris was sixth in the 100 butterfly at 1:31.08 and Kanissorn Nimcharoenwan was fifth in the boys 100 breaststroke in 1:14.20


In the 50 free Haskett was eighth, Norris was 13th and Haeleigh Morgan took 15th while Haskett placed ninth in the 100 backstroke and Morgan was seventh in the 100 breaststroke. Kielee Boldra was 11th in the 100 breaststroke and 19th in the 100 free while Nimcharoenwan place eighth in the 100 free and Michael Rogers was 11th in the 500 free.


Sherman’s Rafael Suarez won the 50 free at 23.73 seconds and claimed second in the 100 butterfly in 57.40 seconds. He also was a part of the district-winning 200 freestyle relay with Sean Bohnet, Jake Mancill and Jordan Dick in 1:38.33.


The quartet combined for a runner-up finish in the medley relay in 1:55.05 and the team of Mancill, Jerrid Couch, Patrick Howard and Cahl Miller was third in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:11.75.


Bohnet qualified in two events — as the runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:04.66) and in third for the 200 free (2:03.06) — while Dick advanced with a third place finish in the 50 free in 24.45 seconds and fourth-place in the 100 butterfly at 1:06.02.


Vanessa Orellana advanced in a pair of events with a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:12.77 and a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley at 2:50.94.


The Lady Bearcats’ 200 free relay of Rebecca Pressley, Orellana, Taylor Bollin and Nicole Segich was third in 1:59.80, the 400 free relay of Bollin, Zoe Lee, Virginia Shelton and Pressley was fourth at 4:40.81 and the 200 medley relay of Segich, Ana Acobyan, Orellana and Pressley was fifth in 2:19.38.


Pressley was fifth in the 50 freestyle at 29.81 while Lee was 10th, Hope Rich took 16th and Gaby Mendoza was 18th.


Bollin had a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 200 free (2:22.39) and the 100 free (1:04.35).


Shelton was seventh in the 100 butterfly and 15th in the 100 backstroke; Sam Shumate took 11th in the 200 freestyle and 14th in the 100 backstroke and Lowe was 12th in the 100 backstroke and 14th in the 100 free.


Acobyan was 16th in the 100 free and Rich was a spot behind. Segich was seventh and Chelsey Bass placed 10th in the 200 free while Segich was eighth, followed by Lee in 10th and Bass in 11th in the 500 free. Acobyan was also eighth in the 100 breaststroke.


Mancill was seventh in the 100 breaststroke; Matthew Keel was 12th in the 200 freestyle and 15th in the 100 free; Alex Fernandez was eighth in the 100 back and 13th in the 50 free; Couch was eighth in the 500 free and 11th in the 100 breaststroke; Isaac Lash took 14th in the 50 free and 16th in the 100 free; Howard was ninth in the 100 breaststroke and 11th in the 100 free.


Pottsboro’s Laney Recer was the district champion in the 100 freestyle for the second straight year in 55.60 seconds and was the runner-up to Fryar in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.10.


The Cardinals’ Tyler Bunch had ninth-place finishes in both the 50 and 100 free.


Gunter had a pair of swimmers qualify for state. Zach Magers was sixth in the 200 free (2:14.34) and fifth in the 500 free (6:18.04) while Madeline Rowe was fifth in the 500 free in 6:15.48 and sixth in the 100 backstroke at 1:15.91.


Dodd City’s Miranda Fannin is trying for her second time at state after winning the 50 free in 26.30 seconds and the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke at 1:10.48.


Wyatt Fannin was a district champion in both of his events — the 100 freestyle (51.91) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.71).
