A hot start to the fourth quarter had Denison in position to steal a victory with the season about to come to an end but the Lady Yellow Jackets were unable to come all the way back from a 16-point deficit in the second half.

Savannah Himes was the only Lady Lion in double figures with 11 points as a balanced Greenville attack held off Denison, 42-35, in District 13-4A action on Friday night.

Bailey Nixon and Dara Williams each scored 14 points with Williams also grabbing 19 rebounds for the Lady Jackets (3-19, 1-12), who have lost nine straight games going into the season finale at McKinney North on Tuesday night.

Denison trailed 30-14 in the middle of the third quarter and could only trim three points off that margin over the final three minutes. Nixon made a three-pointer that Himes answered near the end of the quarter to keep Denison from getting within single digits.

But the Lady Jackets didn’t have to wait much longer. Denison started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run that pulled it within 35-30 with 5:41 remaining.

Williams scored underneath and then Sara McBride hit a three-pointer from the right corner. Jaydan Hunt made a free throw and Williams had a steal and lay-in to make it a two-possession game. But Greenville (6-19, 3-10) held Denison to just two baskets the rest of the way, including a three-pointer by Nixon with five seconds left.

Williams made a jumper with three minutes remaining after two buckets by the Lady Lions gave them a nine-point lead and Denison was never closer than the final score.

The Lady Lions took control by outscoring Denison, 18-4, in the second quarter. Greenville started the stanza on a 10-0 run, keyed by a pair of three-pointers from Kassidy Watson, before Callie Meek ended the run with the Lady Jackets’ only basket of the quarter with 5:14 left in the half.

Williams and Sahara Crawford had free throws to account for the only scoring by the home team until the break. Monica Johnson hit a three-pointer in the final minute to give Greenville a 26-12 half-time advantage.

Denison led almost the entire first quarter when it raced out to an early 5-0 lead behind a Nixon three-pointer and a bank shot by Williams. The Lady Jackets were poised to stay in front before Greenville scored the final four points of the quarter in the closing 32 seconds on a three-pointer by Ruby Pena and a LaQuesha Williams free throw with no time on the clock to tie the score at eight.
