CHARLOTTE — West Texas A&M freshman and Whitewright native Zada Swoopes won the national title in the shot put over the weekend at the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Complex.


Swoopes, who was the only freshman among the nine finalists, won with a personal best throw of 54 feet, two and a half inches on her fourth attempt to win the title. Millersville’s Sunflower Greene was the runner-up at 52 feet, 10 inches.


It was the first national title in the event for West Texas A&M.


Swoopes also placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 159 feet, five inches and was 10 feet from getting into the top five. The winning throw was 194 feet.
