SULPHUR SPRINGS — Payton Griffin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the way for Howe but the Lady Bulldogs fell, 9-2, to New Boston in the opener of a Class 3A regional semifinal series on Thursday night.
Howe (19-12) will try to keep its season alive starting at 5 p.m. on Friday in Game 2 at Sulphur Springs. A third game would follow immediately after if the Lady Bulldogs win.
Karsyn Fleming went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Peyton Streetman went 2-for-2 with a walk and Erin Blackburn and Courtney Hopper each recorded a hit for Howe.
New Boston (22-8) scored six runs in the top of the third inning and were led by McKenzee Thomas — who went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a double. Lauren Hurst went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, Morgan McAlexander and Alexis Morden each went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Haley McAlexander went 1-for-2 with a triple for the Lady Lions.
Class 4A Region II
Argyle 7, Melissa 5
ANNA — Melissa rallied for three runs in the sixth inning but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals fell to undefeated Argyle in Game 1 of a Class 4A regional quarterfinal series on Thursday night.
The Cardinals (26-11) will look to keep their season alive on Friday in Game 2 at Anna. A third game would be played Saturday at 11 a.m. if Melissa wins.
Tate Whittington went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBI to lead the Cardinals while Brady Morrison singled and drove in a run, Trevor Brooks singled and scored and Tyler Womack walked twice.
Argyle (31-0) was led by Austin King — who went 2-for-4 with a double and five RBI — Bryson Hudgens, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Dillon Carter scored three times.
Class 3A Region II
Pottsboro 6, Grand Saline 2
WYLIE — Pottsboro rallied from a two-run deficit with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Cardinals defeated Grand Saline in Game 1 of a Class 3A regional quarterfinal series on Thursday at Wylie East.
Will Cates was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Hunter Watson was 2-for-3 with two doubles and drove in a run, Hayden Kent doubled, walked twice and scored and Jake Williams, Austin Cates and Cooper Lyons drove in runs. Coby Langford allowed an earned run on three hits and three walks and struck out eight.
The Cardinals (22-5) will have a chance to close out the series in Game 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Wylie East. A third game, if necessary, would be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Wylie East.
Grand Saline (18-15) scored their two runs in the top half of the sixth inning before Pottsboro put together what turned out to be the game-deciding rally.
Class 2A Region II
Bells 2, Sam Rayburn 1
Matthew Conner went 1-for-3 with two RBI — including the go-ahead hit in the sixth inning — as Bells defeated Sam Rayburn in the opener of a Class 2A Region II quarterfinal series at Denison on Thursday night.
The two resume the series on Friday night for Games 2 and 3, if necessary, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday in Denison.
Hunter Hawthorne allowed a one run on three hits and struck out 11 for Bells (25-5) while Stephen Hinds was 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored, Kason Huschke went 1-for-4 with a run scored, Tyler Hawthorne was 1-for-3 with a double and Trystan Mallory was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Carson Clark went 2-for-3 and Riley Hall went 1-for-3 with a run scored to lead the way for Sam Rayburn (17-9). Hall struck out six as the hard-luck loser for the Rebels.
Class 1A Region II
Dodd City 8, Saint Jo 3
PONDER — Kason Carson was 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored as Dodd City took Game 1 of its Class 1A regional semifinal series with a win over Saint Jo on Thursday night.
Pate Wilkerson was 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored, Alec Simpson was 2-for-4 and drove in a run and Zayne Kennon singled, drove in a run and scored twice for Dodd City (11-10), which took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The series continues on Saturday with Game 2 scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Ponder. If necessary, a deciding Game 3 would follow.
