LEONARD — After leading the Leonard Tigerettes to one of their best seasons in program history, one of the standouts from that team will get to showcase her talents at the next level.

Leonard point guard Jessi Bennett signed with Ouachita Baptist University on Friday. The Tigers compete in the Great American Conference at the Division II level.

“I’m nervous and excited at the same time,” Bennett said. “I’m glad I get to keep playing the sport I love and it’s a really big accomplishment.”

Bennett was a mainstay for the Tigerettes, averaging 13 points, six assists and four steals per game. Leonard finished 29-4 with a run to the regional quarterfinals this past season.

“Everything here at Leonard has been great,” Bennett said. “This past season, we had a close team and we’re like a family. It was great to go as far as we did in the playoffs.”

She is planning to study kinesiology and step in for a program that finished 14-15 this past season.

“When I went on my visit there, I really loved the professors and the coaches there,” Bennett said, “The campus was beautiful. It’s just a really good Christian school and I could see myself going there.”

With the dream now becoming a reality, she’s confident in knowing that the hard work at Leonard has prepared her to succeed at the next level.

“The program here at Leonard is amazing,” Bennett said, “I know the coaches work really hard with us every day and help us to be the best we can be and that has helped me become a better player.”
