PROSPER — Sherman’s Andrea Torres and Denison’s Kailey Jones won regional championships in their respective weight classes at the Division I Region 6 powerlifting meet on Thursday.

The top two finishers in each weight class advanced to the state meet in Waco on March 16-17. Lifters can qualify in their classifications after the fact.

Torres won the title at 259 pounds with a total of 1,030 pounds, including the top squat total of 475 pounds. She outdistanced the runner-up by 45 pounds.

Jones is headed to state for the third and final time after defending her region title at 181 pounds with a total of 1,250 pounds. She had the top lifts in each category — 500 pounds on squad, 275 on bench and 475 in the deadlift — as she goes for a second straight state championship.

Four other Lady Jackets and another Lady Bearcat also qualified for state.

Denison’s Erin Plemmons also qualified at 105 pounds with a total of 625 pounds. She tied with Plano’s Belen Fuentes for the most weight but was second on a tie-breaker and was five pounds ahead of Cedar Hill’s Aakilah McCoy for the second automatic berth.

Other Denison qualifiers were Asia Medlin in fourth at 114 pounds with a total of 605 pounds. She got fourth place on the losing end of a tie-breaker with Little Elm’s Makayla Campbell; Ravyn Wagoner with a fourth-place at 132 pounds with a total of 760 pounds, and Savanna Henington was fifth at 259 pounds with a total of 925 pounds.

Wylie won the team title with 45 points while Denison was the region runner-up with 17 points. Sherman was 10th with seven points after losing a four-way tie-breaker with Plano, Mansfield Summit and Fort Worth Arlington Heights.

Sherman’s other state qualifier was Maria Lopez, who was sixth at 220 pounds with a total of 795 pounds.

Denison’s Stefani Bermudez was sixth at 97 pounds with a total of 535 pounds.

Denison’s Carla Ledezma was seventh at 198 pounds with a total of 735 pounds.
