If you enjoy wintertime trout fishing on southern Oklahoma’s Blue River near Tishomingo, take notice of not one but two events upcoming over the next few weeks.

First up is the annual President’s Day Blue River Trout Derby, scheduled this year for Feb. 17-18. Entry fees are $20 for youth (15 and under) and $25 for adults.

Sponsored by the Johnston County Chamber of Commerce, the city of Tishomingo, and the Blue River Association, door prizes and derby awards will be presented in a number of different categories including heaviest trout and heaviest stringers.

In addition, a number of big trout in the three to eight-pound range will be stocked for the event along with numerous tagged trout carrying rewards of $20, $50 and even $100.

Tickets can be purchased for the derby at Scotty’s Blue River One Stop in Tishomingo. For information, call 580-371-9288 or 580-371-2175.

Next up will be the seventh annual Blue River Fly Classic, a one-fly fundraising event held on Saturday, March 3. Please note that the entry deadline for the event is this weekend on Sunday, Feb. 10.

In addition to the fun of competing in the one-fly event, Blue River Association organizers say that the annual fundraiser will send all of the money raised to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation in support of the agency’s Catch-and-Release fishing section on the Blue.

Entry fees for the event are $35 per contestant with the chance to purchase an additional fly (which will be the same mystery fly pattern revealed to contestants on the morning of the derby) for $10.

All contestants will receive the same pattern at the start of the event. When they lose the fly (or flies if an extra one is purchased), that contestant is out of the event.

Fish brought to hand will be scored on the honor system and prizes will be awarded to the day’s top three finishers. In addition, raffle tickets will be sold for several prizes to be given away.

To enter the Blue River Fly Classic, send a check or money order (made payable to the Blue River Association) to Barry C. Shrader, C/O Blue River Fly Classic, 700 E. Wynnewood, Sulphur, Okla. 73086.
