The Bells aerial combination of junior quarterback Bryan Ponder and senior receiver Hunter Hawthorne led the way for the area’s Class 2A all-state selections for the 2017 season by the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors.
Ponder was named the classification’s Offensive Player of the Year and was first-team all-state after completing 270-of-374 passes for 3,696 yards and 47 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He was second-team all-state as a sophomore.
Hawthorne had 102 catches for 1,605 yards and 22 touchdowns and was named first-team all-state for the second straight season after second-team all-state honors as a sophomore.
Voting is based on regular season statistics only.
Wolfe City junior defensive lineman Eric Fisk was also named first-team all-state after totaling 72 tackles, 32 for a loss, and 19 sacks.
Wolfe City senior offensive lineman Kellan Anderson and Bells senior linebacker Wade Rolen were named second-team all-state.
Anderson graded out at 94 percent with no sacks allowed and 62 pancake blocks.
Rolen had 145 tackles, 12 for a loss, with six fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and two sacks.
Bells senior offensive lineman Chance Morse was named honorable mention all-state. He was a second-team selection as a junior.
