WOLFFORTH — Kemonte Dowdy hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Sherman Bearcats to a 71-69 victory over Amarillo Palo Duro on Friday in the opening round of the Gene Messer Shootout.
Jaylyn Cleamons led the Bearcats with 23 points. Palo Duro led 41-36 at halftime and 54-53 after three quarters, but Sherman outscored the Dons 18-15 in the final period.
Sherman will play El Paso Socorro, a 53-45 winner over Lubbock Monterey, at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the second round. The Bearcats will play an opponent to be determined at either 4 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Frisco Independence 91, Denison 66
SANGER — Mykel Anderson scored 18 points as Denison closed out the first day of the Sanger Tournament with a loss against Frisco Independence on Thursday.
Nate Uber added 10 points, Rustin Workman chipped in 10 points and Dontre Flowers finished with eight points for the Yellow Jackets (2-4), who opened the season with a loss against Independence.
Denison opened the tournament with a 88-64 victory against Tyler John Tyler. Anderson scored 25 points, Flowers added 12 points, Pierce Barker finished with nine points and Tarrence Gaines and Workman each chipped in eight points for the Yellow Jackets.
Van Alstyne 81, Denton Braswell 75, OT
SANGER — Noah Boling hit nine three-pointers and scored 33 of his 43 points after half-time as Van Alstyne opened the Sanger Tournament with an OT win against Braswell on Thursday.
Samuel Tormos added 13 points and C.J. Leutwyler chipped in 10 points for the Panthers.
Whitewright 58, McKinney Christian 48
FARMERSVILLE — Dylan Pitt scored 19 points as Whitewright pulled away to defeat McKinney Christian.
Whitewright trailed 28-27 at halftime, but took a 44-42 lead after three quarters and outscored McKinney Christian 14-6 in the fourth quarter.
Marcus Reeves and Will Stephens added 10 points apiece for Whitewright, which plays Blue Ridge and Nevada Community in tourney action on Friday.
Celeste 83, Gunter 39
CELESTE — Zander Turner scored 19 points during Gunter’s loss against the host Blue Devils in the Celeste Tournament on Thursday.
Kyle Watson added eight points and Tyler Scott finished with seven points for the Tigers, who face Caddo Mills at 11:30 a.m. today as tourney play continues.
Gunter started the tournament with a 72-46 victory against Quinlan Boles. Turner scored 21 points, Clay Lemons and Scott each finished with 14 points and Watson totaled 10 points for the Tigers.
Caddo Mills 69, Tom Bean 57
CELESTE — Bryce Grier had 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists as Tom Bean opened the Celeste Tournament with a loss against Caddo Mills on Thursday.
Blakeston Jones added 11 points and five rebounds while Dillon Curd finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals and Ben Lind chipped in eight points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Tomcats.
Pottsboro 92, TCS JV 13
SADLER — Ross Hendrix scored 22 points as Pottsboro opened the S&S Tournament with a victory against Texoma Christian’s junior varsity on Thursday.
Ethyn Snider added 15 points, Kai Barr finished with 14 points, Daniel Arnold totaled 13 points and Blake Dyer chipped in 12 points for Pottsboro (3-0), which takes on Henrietta today at 4:30 p.m. as tourney play continues.
