CELINA — Zya Nugent had 28 points, six assists, six steals and five rebounds as Denison defeated Celina, 82-57, in non-district action.
Zachareia Sommers added 14 points, five rebounds and three assists, Olivia Marr chipped in 10 points , six assists and three steals and Taryn Gaines finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Denison (2-0).
Melissa 52, Howe 41
HOWE — Melissa's Sally Clemmons scored 17 points as the Lady Cardinals defeated Howe in non-district action on Tuesday.
Taylor Carney added 12 points and five rebounds and Taylor Thomas chipped in nine points for the Lady Cardinals.
Melissa opened up an 18-0 lead in the first quarter before Howe closed the margin to 10 at halftime.
Whitesboro 45, Gainesville 38
WHITESBORO — Casey Monk had a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds as Whitesboro opened its season with a victory over Gainesville.
Monk also blocked six shots and had three assists and four steals to lead Whitesboro. Destiny Mack and Piper Dunn each scored nine points for Whitesboro with Phoenix West adding eight points and 12 rebounds.
Gainesville was led by Pshylah Kemp with 15 points. Myricle Davis added nine points and Nyesha Lawson had eight for the Lady Leopards.
Whitesboro (1-0) will play at Denison at noon Saturday.
Van Alstyne 54, Gunter 48
GUNTER — Maegan Thomas scored 14 points, Emma Donald added 13 and Avery Duncan had 10 as Van Alstyne opened its season with a road victory over Gunter.
Gunter's Tori Gittens led all scorers with 16 points.
Van Alstyne outscored Gunter 20-8 in the second quarter after the teams played to a 12-12 tie in the first, then held on in the second half.
Van Alstyne (1-0) will host Celeste on Saturday in its home opener.
Leonard 61, Saltillo 15
SALTILLO — Bridget Watson scored 21 points and Jessi Bennett added 10 as Leonard cruised past Saltillo.
Leonard opened up a 10-point lead in the first quarter and was up 12 at halftime before blowing the game open in the second half. Leonard outscored Saltillo 39-5 over the final two quarters, including 14-0 in the fourth.
Alyssa Davis and Remi Long each had seven points for Leonard. Bennett added seven steals and five assists with Watson getting three steals.
Honey Grove 59, Forney 47
FORNEY — Diavian Shaw scored 31 points as Honey Grove opened its season with a victory against Forney on Tuesday.
Shemiyah Finney added 16 points and Isabella Morrison chipped in five points for Honey Grove.
Ector 41, Celeste 35
ECTOR — Destiny Whitburn scored a game-high 23 points as Ector rallied to defeat Celeste in its season opener.
Ector trailed 7-1 after the first quarter, but pulled within a point at halftime and outscored Celeste 17-9 in the third quarter to take the lead.
Sunnie Bingham added seven points for Ector (1-0), which plays at Bellevue on Friday.
Celeste was led by Jaycee Brown with 11 points and Bethany Carter with eight.
Fannindel 39, Trenton 29
TRENTON — Madison Barnes and Jessica Withrow each scored nine points and Karleigh Carter added eight points to lead Trenton in a non-district loss to Fannindel.
Gabriell Edwards had three points to round out the scoring for Trenton (0-2), which returns to action Saturday at Sam Rayburn.
