Tarleton Athletics has announced that Hailey Roberts and Chase Varnado are the inaugural recipients of the Tarleton Student-Athletes of the Month award. The duo has been named the student-athletes of the month for October.

The student-athlete of the month is selected based on the all-around student-athlete for one male and one female. The student-athlete will show effort and excellence in academics, leadership, civility, dedication to the team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future Tarleton State University students and student-athletes.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete has to be nominated by their head coach or athletic administrator and also maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or better.

Roberts is a senior outside hitter for the No. 11-ranked TexAnn volleyball team. In eight matches played this month, Roberts posted 106 kills on a .300 hitting percentage while leading the TexAnns to a perfect 8-0 record so far this month. Roberts has guided the TexAnns to a program-record 14-game winning streak.

Varnado is a senior defensive end for the Texan football team. Varnado posted 17 tackles, had 3.5 tackles for a loss and 0.5 sacks in three games in October. Varnado recorded nine tackles, including two for a loss against Eastern New Mexico.

Once selected as student-athlete of the month, those recipients are eligible to be selected for Tarleton Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the season. The yearly award will be recognized at the student-athlete awards banquet in the spring.
