MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Southern Arkansas jumped out to a big early lead Saturday on the way to defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State 49-19 in Great American Conference action at Wilkins Stadium.
Barrett Renner passed for 306 yards and three touchdowns and Michael Nunnery rushed for 112 yards and three scores as the Muleriders (6-2) handed the Savage Storm (6-2) their second loss in a row.
Southern Arkansas led 28-0 early in the second quarter on Keiandre Purifoy’s 26-yard TD run, Barrett’s 52-yard scoring pass to Garrett Turnbull and TD runs of 4 and 2 yards by Nunnery.
Southeastern Oklahoma State cut the margin to 28-9 at halftime as Austin Skinner found Codey McElroy for a 10-yard touchdown and Joel Carlos hit a 41-yard field goal as time expired. Carlos hit a second 41-yarder in the third quarter after Nunnery scored on a 1-yard run.
Skinner finished 23 of 48 for 242 yards and two touchdowns. McElroy, who had three catches for 20 yards, also pulled in a 3-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter to get SOSU within 35-19.
Renner, who completed 20 of 31 passes, hit Karonce Higgins for a 50-yard score and Turnbull from 11 yards out in the final four minutes to conclude the scoring. Higgins caught six passes for 89 yards.
Southern Arkansas outgained SOSU 572 total yards to 284, holding SOSU to 42 yards rushing.
Hunter Powell had 13 tackles and an interception to lead the SOSU defense.
