Birmingham-Southern used three touchdowns of 75 yards or longer, two of them on special teams, to defeat Austin College 31-24 on Saturday in the Kangaroo’s home finale at Apple Stadium.


Austin College (3-5 overall, 1-5 Southern Athletic Association) twice saw chances to take control of the game whisked away by the Panthers (2-5, 1-4). The ’Roos out gained BSC 434 total yards to 261 and held a 14 minute, 40 seconds edge in time of possession.


With the score tied at 7 early in the second quarter, the ’Roos lined up for a 35-yard field goal to take the lead, but BSC’s Matthew Byers blocked the kick and Wes Guilford scored on a 75-yard return.


After AC tied the score at 14 later in the half, Jamal Watkins returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to put the Panthers ahead to stay.


Birmingham-Southern quarterback Trevor Oakes was 13 of 24 for 144 yards, most of which came on a 76-yard touchdown pass to Watkins on the third play of the game.


Colt Collins threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead AC. Collins was 26 of 43 passing for 288 yards, but was intercepted twice. Collins also ran for 65 yards, scoring on an 11-yard run in the first quarter.


Kyle Mucerino, who caught six passes for 86 yards, scored on a 24-yard reception to briefly tie the game in the second quarter.


Austin College got within four twice in the second half, but BSC answered each score to secure the victory.
