HOWE — The Silver Spike trophy and bragging rights belong to Van Alstyne once again after a 53-27 victory over Howe in District 5-3A (I) action on Friday.
It was the 11th straight victory in the rivalry for the Panthers (5-2, 1-1), who jumped to a 20-point half-time lead.
“They all played well today,” Van Alstyne head coach Mikeal Miller said.
The Bulldogs (0-7, 0-2) fought back in the third quarter with two touchdown runs by quarterback Chase Harvey but Van Alstyne was in control behind its quarterback, Rhett Gallagher.
Gallagher finished 17-of-23 passing for 307 yards and four touchdowns and ran eight times for 162 yards and two scores.
The Panthers went up 20-0 on touchdown runs on 60 and seven yards by Gallagher and a 16-yard TD pass to Austin Moore.
Andrew Griffin, who finished with 141 yards on 25 carries, broke through the defense to score a six-yard touchdown with two minutes left to go in the second quarter to get the Bulldogs on the scoreboard.
Gallagher had a 29-yard touchdown pass to Moore right before the break to extend the lead to 27-7.
Early in the third quarter Dylan Porter caught a 35-yard touchdown pass as the Panthers widened the gap.
Harvey scored on a two-yard run before Tanner Jones answered with an eight-yard TD run for Van Alstyne.
Harvey scored again from just outside the goal line and it was 39-21 late in the third.
Porter caught another touchdown pass — this time for 19 yards — and Jake Carroll added a four-yard TD run in the middle of the fourth quarter to close out the Van Alstyne scoring.
Porter had eight catches for 122 yards and Wilson added six receptions for 95 yards.
