WHITESBORO — The Gunter Tigers continue to roll, winning their 19th straight game with a 52-13 victory over the Whitesboro Bearcats in non-district play on Friday night.

Gunter (3-0), which has the second-longest win streak in the state behind West Orange-Stark’s 28 after Bremond’s 49-gamer ended with a 28-21 loss to Milano on Friday, held Whitesboro (2-1) to 68 yards rushing and jumped to an early lead.

The Tigers made sure to capitalized on just about every mistake. Whitesboro went three and out and Gunter took the ball on its first drive and six plays later put up the first score as Peyton Lowe had the touchdown from the one-yard line.

The Bearcats answered four plays later with Scout Sanders connecting with Bradley Klingler on a 47-yard touchdown pass.

It was a short-lived tie as Clayton Reed returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards for a score and the Tigers led 14-7 in the middle of the first quarter.

Gunter’s defense shut down Whitesboro again and Ethan Everson, who had 65 yards on just three carries, capped the scoring drive with a 48-yard TD run at the 7:42 mark of the second quarter.

Whitesboro recovered a punt when it touched a Tiger and took over with a drive that made it to the Gunter 24-yard-line. But the Bearcats were unable to convert on fourth down.

The Tigers turned that into a 28-7 lead with another long scoring drive. Lowe had his second touchdown run, this one of 31 yards, as Gunter widened the gap.

Opening the second half it was more of the same for the Tigers, who took possession at the 40 after recovering an onside kick. Daylan Bower ran 59 yards for a touchdown and a 35-7 advantage. He led Gunter with 148 yards on nine carries.

A short punt gave Gunter good field position and Dylan Jantz had the 10-yard TD run.

Whitesboro put together a scoring drive from its 25. Sanders ran it in from the six but the PAT was blocked. He managed just 25 yards on 17 carries.

Gunter opened up the fourth with a 41-yard field goal by Evan Gonzalez.

Since Whitesboro had trouble moving the ball on the ground, the Bearcats had 129 yards passing has Sanders connected on 10-of-13 attempts but it also led to the final touchdown of the night when Layke Reed returned an interception 37 yards for the 52-13 final.

Gunter will face Pilot Point at home this week while Whitesboro will play Melissa at home.
