The Sewanee Tigers picked off five passes Saturday to shut down Austin College on Saturday, handing the Kangaroos their first loss of the season, 29-17, in the Southern Athletic Association opener for both teams at Apple Stadium.

The Kangaroos (2-1, 0-1) returned two blocked extra points, but managed just 174 total yards. AC rushed for 55 yards as two fumbles resulted in big losses.

Warren Holland rushed for three touchdowns while Alex Darras passes for 215 yards and a score to lead Sewanee (2-1, 1-0). Holland finished with 92 yards on 24 carries with 15 of 23 passes.

Drew Bicknell opened the scoring for AC with a 2-yard run. Holland answered with a 6-yard TD run, but T.J. Melontree returned a blocked PAT 98 yards to give the ’Roos a 9-6 led, Darras connected with Allan Puri for a 23-yard TD with 55 seconds left in the first half to give Sewanee the lead for good.

Holland scored from a yard out to open the third quarter, but AC got within a touchdown as Cesar Ruiz kicked field goals of 46 and 18 yards to cut Sewanee’s lead to 20-15,

Sewanee’s Michael Jacobs kicked a 27-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter and Holland added another one-yard TD with 5:18 remaining. Again, AC blocked the PAT with Jackson Townsend returning it 98 yards for the final points.

Colt Collins was 5 of 18 passing for 75 yards for AC. Evan Powell rushed for 23 yards and Bicknell finished with 22.
