COMMERCE — J.J. Brian ran in the conversion after Chance Sanderson’s overtime touchdown catch and Leonard stopped Commerce’s two point conversion to come back from a 16-point half-time deficit and take a 50-48 win over Commerce in non-district action on Friday night at Texas A&M-Commerce.
Sanderson caught the 11-yard score from Ronnie Hart before Brian produced what turned out to be the deciding points.
When Commerce (0-2) got the ball, Casey Shields had a four-yard touchdown run but Leonard earned the victory when it held on the conversion.
Brian led Leonard with 22 rushes for 244 yards and three touchdowns while Hart added 179 yards and two scores on 15 carries to go with a pair of TD passes.
Commerce got on the board first with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Miller to Kedriq Kelley.
But Brian had an immediate answer with Leonard cutting into the lead, 7-6, on a 63-yard touchdown run.
Shields, who ran for five touchdowns, then extended Commerce’s advantage with a one-yard touchdown run with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter Hart scored from seven yards out but the conversion failed so Leonard couldn’t pull even.
The teams continued to trade touchdowns in the middle of the frame.
Shields had a 20-yard scoring run for Commerce.
Brian followed with a 37-yard TD to cap a 76-yard drive for Leonard.
But in the closing minutes of the half Commerce scored twice to take a 34-18 lead.
Shields completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Gray and then Shields scored from a yard out.
Leonard’s defense held Commerce scoreless in the third quarter and Brian ran for a 43-yard touchdown, adding the conversion to make it a 34-26 deficit.
Early in the fourth quarter Michael Shulze caught an 83-yard touchdown pass from Hart and Byron Bolin caught the two-point conversion to tie the score.
Just minutes later Hart scored on a 56-yard run and ran in the conversion for a 42-34 lead but Leonard couldn’t hold off Commerce in regulation.
Shields scored from five yards out and Isaiah Askew ran in the conversion with four minutes left to force the overtime.
Leonard will host Celeste this week in non-district action.
