CALLISBURG — The S&S Rams held off the Callisburg Wildcats for a 28-25 victory to open the season on Friday night.
Chazz Maxey led the effort with 110 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and Jayce Howard had a 47-yard TD pass to Ruri Aguilar in the third quarter that provided enough to hold off Callisburg’s comeback.
Following alternating possessions to open the game, Callisburg put points on the board with a 75-yard run by Brandon Hutson.
S&S was scoreless in the first quarter as Calisburg led 6-0 but the Rams controlled the second quarter with three touchdowns. Maxey scored twice on six- and three-yard runs for a 14-6 advantage.
Hutson, who had six carries for 125 yards, scored on a 29-yard run in the middle of the quarter to cut Callisburg’s deficit to two points.
The Rams took back the momentum as Howard, who totaled 18 carries for 105 yards, finished the scoring in the half running in from the one-yard line with just over a minute remaining until the break.
In the third quarter, Callisburg was driving near midfield but a fumble gave S&S the ball on its 48-yard line. Howard then connected with Aguilar for a TD and the Rams took a 28-12 lead.
Eli Parker, who had 10 carries for 43 yards, ran in from the 10-yard line to bring the score 28-19 with 5:20 remaining in the third.
It stayed that way until Callisburg scored again from the six-yard0line with Parker cutting the gap to three points just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter.
S&S was able to hold on from there.
S&S travels to Tom Bean this Friday while Callisburg travels to Anna.
