Defending Class 1A state champion Tioga opens at No. 3 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 2A preseason volleyball poll released on Monday.

The Lady Bulldogs, who beat Bronte in a five-set thriller in last fall’s championship game, are the highest-rated 1A team in the 2A poll, behind two-time 2A state champion Iola at No. 1 and Archer City at No. 2. Class 1A and 2A are combined for the regular season, with the two classes splitting up for the playoffs.

In Class 3A, Callisburg opens at No. 6 in the TGCA rankings after reaching the state semifinals a year ago. The Lady Wildcats’ roster returns almost intact from 2016 with only three graduating seniors.

No Texomaland teams are ranked in the 4A and 5A polls, but teams of local interest include Argyle at No. 2 and Paris North Lamar at No. 10 in 4A, and Lovejoy at No. 3 and Frisco Wakeland at No. 7 in 5A.

Volleyball practice begins a week from today, Aug. 1, with first scrimmages allowed Aug. 4 and the first games Aug. 8.
