BELLS — With the Lady Panthers down to their final out, Cheyenne Floyd and Bella Smith proved to handle the moment beyond their years.

The freshmen helped deliver Bells the Class 2A state championship as Floyd’s two-run double tied the game in the seventh inning and Smith immediately followed with a two-run homer that proved to be the difference in the 7-6 win over two-time defending champ Shiner.

Floyd also earned the victory, getting the final out on a flyout to Smith in right field.

Floyd was 22-3 with a 2.41 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 136.1 innings and hit .521 with 19 doubles, five homers, 57 RBI and 38 runs. She was the 13-2A Newcomer of the Year, a TGCA all-state pick and the MVP at the 2A state tourney.

Smith, an outfielder, hit .423 with seven homers and 30 RBI. She was a second-team all-district pick in 13-2A and chosen for the 2A all-state tournament team.

The two share the nod as the Herald Democrat All-Texomaland Softball Newcomer for the 2017 season.
