LUBBOCK — Ryne Randle batted 5-for-6 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored to lead a 20-hit Grayson College attack as the Vikings outslugged Odessa College, 16-9, on Saturday to advance in the NJCAA Region 5 tournament at Texas Tech’s Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Vikings (37-12) are a win away from the Region 5 championship game and will play either Weatherford College or McLennan Community College this evening at 5 p.m. Weatherford and McLennan played Saturday night’s late winner’s-bracket game.
Every Viking batter had at least one hit against Odessa, the No. 1 seed out of the WJCAC, and Grayson never trailed after opening the game with three runs in the first inning.
Andrew Miller was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI, and Ty Jones wound up 3-for-6 with a triple, a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Mark Gottsacker finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored.
Braxton Webb labored over 5 1/3 innings but got the win, allowing eight runs — six earned — on seven hits, striking out six and walking six. Webb also hit two batters and uncorked three wild pitches.
Miller’s two-run single put the Vikings on the board in the top of the first, and Seth Mullis later scored on an error.
Odessa scored one in the first and two in the second to tie it at 3-3, but Jackson Glenn’s sacrifice fly scored Randle to put Grayson in front to stay.
