ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — No. 23 Southeastern saw its 2017 postseason run come to an end on Thursday morning with a 5-0 loss to No. 6 Hawaii Pacific in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II National Finals at Sanlando Park.
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 21-3 overall on the year and gives them a top-8 national finish, the highest in program history and the fourth-best finish by any SE sports program since joining NCAA Division II.
SE was swept in doubles play for the first time this postseason despite Maria Martinez and Luisa Auffarth forced a tiebreaker set at three doubles against Leticia dos Santos and Bianca Schulhof, but fell 7-5 in the tiebreaker and 9-8 in the match.
Anna Buiukian and Samantha Coguinos dropped an 8-1 decision at number two, 8-1, while Alexsandra Reljic and Darija Catipovic dropped an 8-3 match at number one to head to singles down 3-0.
Reljic at the one singles spot was tripped up by No. 2 Nicole Hoynaski, 6-0, 6-0, to fall behind 4-0.
The match would come to an end when Buiukian was toppled by No. 16 Lara Meccico by a 6-1, 6-3 score to finish off the match 5-0.
Martinez picked up SE’s only first set win in singles play, downing dos Santos 6-0, but the match was unfinished with the second set tied at 1-1.
