PRINCETON — Torrey Stubblefield threw a one-hitter, working around seven walks to strike out seven and Howe run-ruled Sunnyvale, 16-0, in five innings in Game 1 of a Class 3A Region II area round series on Thursday night.


Howe (18-7) will look to sweep Sunnyvale tonight in Game 2 at 5 p.m. at Princeton. A third game, if necessary, would follow.


Madisyn Hargrove was 2-for-3 with a home run, drove in three runs and scored twice, Peyton Streetman was 3-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBI and two runs, Payton Griffin was 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and scored and Kamryn Fulenchek was 3-for-4 with a triple, drove in a run and scored three times for the Lady Bulldogs.


Howe scored in every inning and enacted the run-rule with a nine-run fifth inning. RBI triples by Streetman and Griffin were followed by Hargrove’s two-run blast.


The Lady Bulldogs had back-to-back RBI triples by Fulenchek and Emily Sanders and then Erin Blackburn plated a run with a single to make it 6-0 in the third.


Sunnyvale loaded the bases in the second but Stubblefield struck out the last two batters to escape the jam. The lone hit came leading off the sixth as Sunnyvale loaded the bases with two outs but a pop-out sealed the shutout victory.
