Jackson Glenn’s single in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 2 scored pinch runner Jared Viracola with the go-ahead run, and Grayson College beat Hill College in a pitchers’ duel, 2-1, on Wednesday to sweep both ends of an NTJCAC baseball doubleheader at Dub Hayes Field.
The Vikings (35-10, 24-6) extended their latest winning streak to seven, but still trail league leader McLennan by two with two games left.
Seth Mullis was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth and Viracola, running for Mullis, advanced to second on an Andrew Miller sacrifice before scoring on Glenn’s single.
Jose Vasquez picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Braxton Webb, who allowed one run on one hit in 5 1/3 innings. Taylor Floyd pitched the ninth for the save.
In the opener, Mark Gottsacker and Glenn both homered, and the Vikings took the lead for good in the fourth inning and held on for a 7-6 win. Brady Manning was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Manning tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI single in the fourth, and Gottsacker followed with an RBI groundout for the lead.
Grayson starter Tyler Ivey was roughed-up but earned the win, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in five innings. Floyd again pitched the final inning for the save.
