Mason Riggs and Matt Griffin combined on the shutout as Howe beat Van Alstyne, 5-0, in a District 10-3A seeding tie-breaker game at Veterans Field in Sherman on Monday night.

Howe (17-8, 9-4) enters the playoffs as the second seed and will face Whitesboro in the bi-district round later this week in a series at Veterans Field. Game 1 will be at 5 p.m. on Friday with Game 2 to follow. A third game, if necessary, will be at noon on Saturday.

Van Alstyne (14-8, 8-5), will open the postseason against Pottsboro in a series at Anna. Game 1 will be at 8 p.m. on Thursday with Games 2 and 3 at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Riggs scattered five hits and two walks while striking out four in four innings while Griffin struck out five and walked two in three scoreless innings and also was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs, Jaden Matthews was 3-for-3 and scored twice and Bryce Krantz scored twice for Howe, which had a 1-0 lead and then added a pair of runs in third and fourth.

Luke Hundt was 2-for-3 with a walk, Rhett Gallagher singled and walked and Tyler Neshyba and Chandler David singled for Van Alstyne, last year’s Class 3A runner-up.


Texoma Christian 2, Denton Calvary 0

DENTON — Jordan Kroeker threw a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and three walks as Texoma Christian defeated Denton Calvary in a non-district game on Monday.

Kroeker also singled, walked twice and scored, Jake Neidert singled and drove in a run and Jack Turner scored for TAPPS Division V District 1 champion Texoma Christian (7-3), which scored in the fourth and seventh innings.
