LONGVIEW — The Melissa boys doubles team of Brandon Shipes and John Lewis reached the quarterfinals of the Class 4A Region II tennis tournament before being eliminated at Longview High School on Tuesday.

Shipes and Lewis opened with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Atlanta’s Andrew Hammonds and Hunter Daugherty.

They then lost, 6-4, 6-1, against Kilgore’s Tyrese Sheffield and Ian St. Clair in the quarterfinals.

In boys singles, Gainesville’s Trevor Hall suffered a 6-2, 7-5 first-round loss against Carrollton Ranchview’s Isham Mistry.

In girls singles, Anna’s Sydney Jones lost in the first round, 6-4, 6-2, against Center’s Keelan Williams.

Teammate Madeleine Gillespie had a first-round loss, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-2, against Uplift North Hills’ Mariel Kasman.

The Anna girls doubles team of Jewel Canty and Mary Beth Geren had a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 loss in the first round against Bullard’s Belle Ertl and Kallie Hardin.

In mixed doubles, Melissa’s Justin Mercer and Madison McCombs were beaten in the first round, 7-6 (3), 6-3, against Kilgore’s Angelica Rios and Trystan Dobbs.
