TYLER — Five area entries have advanced to the state tennis tournament after the Class 3A Region II tournament at Tyler Junior College on Tuesday.


Whitewright’s Juliann Kelley and Whitesboro’s Makayla Williams qualified in girls singles while Leonard’s girls doubles team of Alyssa Davis and Maggie Scoggins and the Van Alstyne mixed doubles duo of Noah Tormos and Janae Larriviere and the Whitesboro tandem of Scott Gautier and Ruth Leach will also compete at the state tournament May 18-19 at Texas A&M.


Williams beat Kelley, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals and then beat teammate Morgan Portman, 6-3, 6-4, to win the region title and make state for the second straight year.


Portman had advanced to the final with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 win over Erica Hernandez of Chapel Hill.


Kelley then beat Hernandez for third place, 6-2, 7-5, to set up a play-back against Portman, which Kelley won, 6-0, 7-6 (3), to return to state for the second straight yeat but first appearance in singles.


The girls doubles final was an all-Leonard match-up as Davis and Scoggins beat Hailey Black and Abby Newton, 6-2, 6-4, to win the region title. Black and Newton were forced into a play-in match for the second spot at state and lost against Sadie Dearing and Remington Jackson of Ponder, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.


Davis and Scoggins beat Dearing and Jackson, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals while Black and Newton beat Jacquline Castillo and Taylor Reed of Ponder, 6-4, 6-4, in the other semifinal.


Tormos and Larriviere won the region title with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Gautier and Leach, who advanced to state as the runner-up after the team they beat in the semifinals — Alexis Busby and Dacotah Killiam of Lone Oak, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 — won the third-place match. Gautier and Leach are at state for the second straight year.


Tormos and Larriviere had advanced to the final with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Jonathan Flose and Karsen McClain of Prairiland.


Whitewright’s Jacob Andrade and Javier Lopez lost in a boys doubles playback, 6-0, 6-3, against Ponder’s Chase Glenn and James Timmons.


They won their semifinal match, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, against Paul Pewitt’s Sebastian Martinez and Ty Razell but lost the title match, 6-0, 7-6, against Sunnyvale’s Matthew Larson and Parker Sanders.


Class 2A Region II


McKINNEY — The Bells mixed doubles team of Dustin and Meagan Hardin won the Class 2A Region II title and qualified for the state tournament at McKinney Boyd High School on Tuesday.


They won the region with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Gary’s LeeAnn Youngblood and Landon Odom after a 6-4, 6-4 semifinal win against Linden-Kildare’s Adrian Patterson and Karleen Bynum.


Wolfe City’s Jacob Pack and Kiann Northcutt opened with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Lindsay’s Liz Hellman and Garrett Morrow.


The Blue Ridge team of Jared Stroman and Haleigh Chitwood suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss against Adrian Patterson and Karleen Bynum.


In boys doubles, Blue Ridge will have a state qualifier after the school’s two entries play a play-back match at Blue Ridge at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday because of UIL limits on matches in a day.


Cameron Armstrong and Chaice Weatherford will take on teammates Nolan Henderson and Caleb Partridge for the region’s second state berth.


Armstrong and Weatherford advanced to the title match with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win against Lindsay’s Roshan Patel and Luke Metzler before losing, 6-1, 6-3 to eventual champs Roy McCleary and Landon Smith of Poolville.


Henderson and Partridge had a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 quarterfinal win over Quanah’s Matthew Day and Chris Jackson before losing to McCleary and Smith. They then beat Patel and Metzler for third place to force the play-back.


Bells’ Brandon Smith and Nathan Clark opened with a 6-0, 7-5 loss against McCleary and Smith.


In girls singles, Trenton’s Elizabeth Rhoden finished fourth after losing the third-place match, 6-0, 6-4, against Hamilton’s Catherine Kinsey. Rhoden had advanced to the semifinals with a victory against Zoe Sprayberry of Bells but then lost against Archer City’s Breanna Howard, 6-3, 6-3.


Trenton’s Kalin Bennett opened with a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Martin’s Mill’s Madison Mitchell before losing to eventual champion Haleigh Dollins of Hawkins, 6-0, 6-0.


In boys singles, Blue Ridge’s Jason Price started with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sam Rayburn’s Casey Payne but then lost, 6-3, 6-0, against Seymour’s Kade McAdams.


Bells’ Zac Sprayberry opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Era’s Cade Klement but then lost against eventual champ Blaine Chandler of Petrolia.


In girls doubles, Blue Ridge’s Ellery Martin and Shelby Gerner lost the third-place match, 7-5, 6-4, against Meridian’s Mackenzie Errington and Reese Errington. They had advanced to the semifinals before a 7-5, 6-2 loss against eventual champ Daniela Landaverde and Aracely Rivera of Martin’s Mill.


Bells’ Danielle Doggett and Charli Waggoner suffered a 6-0, 6-1 first-round loss against eventual runners-up Alexis Box and Adrianna Weatherford of Martin’s Mill.


Class 1A Region III


WHITNEY — Ector’s Emma Harris and Taylor Merworth qualified for the state tournament with a runner-up girls doubles finish at the Class 1A Region III tournament at Whitney High School on Tuesday.


The duo had a first-round bye, then beat Iredell’s Savanna Potter and Bianca Munoz before a 6-0, 6-2 semifinal win against Lometa’s Maclinta Alaniz and Emily Rosales. Harris and Merworth then lost in the title match, 6-4, 6-3, against Iredell’s Madison Ogburn and Hannah Fowler.


Tioga’s Brittany Barnett and Destini Maness won their opener, 6-3, 6-4, against Blanket’s Braylynn Roberts and Brianna Andrews before losing, 6-3, 6-0, against Ogburn and Fowler.


Tioga’s Josiah DeLeon lost in a playback in boys singles after he had advanced to the championship match with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win against Mullin’s Skylar Smith before losing against Slidell’s Stone Coston, 6-0, 6-2.


But then DeLeon came up short for the second state tourney berth with a 7-5, 6-2 loss against Throckmorton’s Adam Dennis.


Ector’s Kenny Nelms opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win before a 6-0, 6-0 loss against Coston.


In girls singles, Ector’s Marisela Salazar reached the semifinals before a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 loss against eventual runner-up Kassie Newton of Iredell.


Tioga’s Alexis Garcia lost her opening match, 7-6 (1), 6-2, to Throckmorton’s Lauren King.


In boys doubles, Ector’s J.B. Johnson and Nathan Essary took third place with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Lometa’s Adrian Rivera and Faustino Laessig. Johns and Essary made it to the semifinals before losing, 6-2, 6-2, to runner-up Carlos Perez and Josue Castruita of Lometa.


Ector’s Andrew Groneck and Ethan Norwood opened with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Throckmorton’s Aksel Karabagli and Zack Stapp before a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 loss against Rivera and Laessig.


In mixed doubles, Ector’s Payton Anderson and Adi Pandey won their first match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 against Priddy’s Dominic Goehmann and Linda Evans before a 6-0, 6-0 loss to eventual champions Ally Johnson and Colton Fowler of Iredell.


The Ector duo of Tori Martin and Garen Northwood lost, 6-0, 6-0, in their opening match to Iredell’s Kyra Coffell and Alex Argott.
