Denison resident Diane Varley has been selected as the November "Photographer of the Month" by the Friends of Hagerman. Twelve of her photographs, taken at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, are being featured throughout the month at www.friendsofhagerman.com/Gallery.

Varley became interested in photography soon after her marriage, taking photos of travel destinations and friends. She says, however, that artistic interest runs in the family. Her father painted landscapes as a hobby, her younger sister is an accomplished artist and graphic designer, and her oldest son has operated his own multimedia company for several years.

She began with film photography, but says the digital medium is more rewarding due to the instant feedback. She began with several compact point-and-shoot digital cameras and, later, changed to a more complex digital camera. Her photography has been focused on family pictures and vacations as she enjoys capturing interesting photographs of people, landscapes and panoramas. She has only recently started trying her hand at nature photography.

"I find it very challenging as here things move and you cannot always get the composition you want," says Varley of photography at the wildlife refuge. "Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is a very good place to work on nature photography."
