The Denison City Council is expected to hold a public hearing regarding the annexation of 427 acres southwest of the city during its regular monthly meeting Monday. The acreage, which includes the under-construction Hilton Garden Inn and Texoma Event Center, is being developed by local businessman Tom Johnson as part of the Gateway Village housing and retail project.

The city previously created a Tax Increment Reimbursement Zone at the location, which allows the developer to be paid-back for improvements to roads and utilities. Annexation would allow the city to collect property taxes on homes and businesses, enabling the TIRZ to function.

Additional city business expected to be discussed by the Council includes a report by Chief Building Official Dale Jackson regarding unsafe structures at 226 and 228 E. Nelson St., 522 E. Acheson Rd., 715 W. Texas St. and 619 W. Chestnut St. Typically, councilors accept the building official’s recommendations unless property owners provide a counterargument.

The Council is planning to revisit the demolition of the abandoned school house at 715 W. Sears. The Council’s agenda holds open the possibility of using executive session to tackle the issue.

The consent agenda for the meeting includes applications for participation in the TexPool and TexSTAR programs, two local government investment vehicles.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Denison City Hall.
