BONHAM — The Anna Coyotes had a unique opportunity — get a win and have sole possession of first place in District 12-3A — but the Bonham Warriors had ideas of getting back into the race.

Using a fast start and the play of Dra Smith, Bonham came away with a 34-19 victory against the Coyotes on Friday night.

Smith finished with 174 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and he threw a pair of TD passes.

"We got off to a slow start and dug our self a whole in the first half," Anna head coach Jason Heath said. "They gave us a different look on offense and we had a difficult time slowing them down to start the game."

On the first play of the game, Isaac Armijo ran the ball for 15 yards and took Anna (2-6, 1-1) into Warrior territory. The Coyotes were shut down from there and Bonham (3-5, 1-1) took over on downs and put together a three-play, 65-yard drive that took just 59 seconds and gave the Warriors the early lead.

Jacob Kemp ran the ball on all three of those rushing plays, the last going 25 yards for the score. He finished with 94 yards on 14 carries.

Midway through the first, Bonham again scored quickly on a 74-yard run by Smith.

The Bonham offense was quiet for several drives but scored again late in the half, converting two fourth-down plays to keep the drive alive and then Greg Moses caught a pass on a slant route for a 10-yard touchdown to put Bonham ahead by 21.

Anna replied on its ensuing drive, utilizing two Bonham penalties that helped take the ball inside the red zone before Armijo scored from six yards out.

Bonham got the ball back with less than a minute to go in the half and answered with a Kenton Manis touchdown run.

"We had our opportunities but were unable to make the plays when we needed too," Heath said. "The Smith kid is a great player and wherever he is on the field makes you adjust to him."

Anna scored to start the second half when Ty Chapman connected with Hunter Green for a 36-yard TD pass but Smith found Tevin Rushing on an eight-yard scoring strike to extend Bonham’s lead.

Anna will take on Princeton this week. Bonham has its bye week.

"We have to be more physical both offensively and defensively," Heath said. "At times we can be a physical team but to often we are not getting the job done. We will continue to evaluate what we are doing in practice and make changes. We know Princeton is a very good team but we can be to when we execute."
