SHERMAN — St. John CME Church will host its "Friends and Family Day" at 3 p.m. Sunday.


Guest speaker will be Rev. Alton Blakely, pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Denison. His congregation will be special guests.


Rev. Blakely, an Oklahoma City native, and formerly of St John Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, announced his call to preach in 1988. He was licensed to preach in 1990 by M.L. Jemison, pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist. In 1998, he left Oklahoma City to pursue a Master of Divinity at Perkins Theological Seminary on the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas. He completed his degree in 2003 and in that same year, joined First Baptist, McKinney, and served as Administrative Assistant, youth pastor and Director of Christian Education under the leadership of Lee Edwards, pastor.


Later, he pastored Sixteenth St. Baptist in Honey Grove for two years, and then returned as Christian Education Director at First Baptist, McKinney. In 2012, he became pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Denison.


Rev. Blakely has worked with at-risk youth for more than six years and received numerous awards for his work. He is also one of the founders of Helping Hands Home Services, an agency that provides services to persons with disabilities.

The church is located at 300 E. College St. in Sherman. Rev. Steve A. Lewis Sr. is the pastor.
