I am not only a Boy Scout, but also an aficionado of skateboarding. Here in Sherman, we have a small city-run skatepark. It is located inn Hawn Park, at the intersection of Thomas and Dewey streets.

The Parks and Recreation Department has done a few improvements to our skatepark in the past, but nothing recently. One of the reasons that more improvements have not been made is because too many people are painting and writing graffiti on the park structures. Perhaps, if these people could constrain themselves, we might get some of the improvements we’d like to have.

Also, the budget is probably an issue, though I do not know that for fact. Our town has had several Soccer Park improvements in the last several years, but not much put into our skatepark. The city is full of signs and notices that prohibit skateboarding on public property, but this leaves us (as skateboarders) with few options for a place to enjoy our sport.

Many cities to our south have very nice parks to offer their communities, but driving to them can be expensive and inconvenient. I cannot say that I know what all the plans for the Sherman skatepark might be in the future, but I hope that some improvements can be made, so that we have a safe place to practice our sport that is also fun and enjoyable.
