As I have grown older I have had to come to grips with the truth: I am not athletic. While I did some running as a kid in elementary school, and in recent years I’ve had an on-again off-again love affair with trying to get myself into a shape other than round, I always have to come back down to the reality that I will never be a professional athlete.

That said, sitting on the couch and watching the professionals at the Winter Olympics is right up my alley. I get to sit back and do the things that I do the best (which is doing nothing at all), while the professionals do what they do best. I get to ride alongside with a vicarious sense of accomplishment. U-S-A! U-S-A!

While the events officially started yesterday, the Olympics truly start for me with the opening ceremony, which will be aired tonight. The opening ceremony is what always got me pumped and excited for each Olympics, even if there is a distinct lack of sports.

While there are already reports coming out from various outlets that things around Sochi aren’t what they should be in preparation for an event that has the eyes of the entire world fixated on Russia, I think it is important to keep in mind what the Olympics is about. It is the time, every few years, when the world sets aside its differences, its grudges, its politics for the sake of the game, the competition. Sure, rivalries come along with the competition, but it is all for the sake of the game.
