I literally laughed out loud when I read an article saying that a recent scientific study revealed that "although pet cats are more than capable of recognizing their owner’s voice, they choose to ignore them."

That sounds so typical of how people often characterize cats, doesn’t it?

I grew up with dogs: one Cairn terrier named Chance and a poodle named Roxi. However, my boyfriend Daniel is a "cat person" and owns two Russian blue cats named Shadow and Chewie. Being around those cats has caused me to realize how many funny differences there are between cats and dogs.

For example: dogs tend to not be picky about food, while cats are. My family’s dog Chance will eat literally anything, any time.

Once, when I was in high school, my family was eating dinner when my mom accidentally dropped a serving bowl of green beans. We were about to clean the spilled beans up and throw them away, when my brother suggested we see if Chance would eat them. We let Chance inside and, sure enough, he made a beeline to the green beans and ate ALL of them, tail wagging.

Shadow and Chewie are not nearly this easy to please. You give them dry food, they won’t eat it – they wanted canned food. The next time you feed them you give them canned food, and it turns out they wanted dry food. They also won’t eat dry food if it’s been sitting out for too long.

Cats are not easily amused. For Christmas, my parents gave Daniel’s cats a stuffed rat. When presented with the rat, the cats looked at it, sniffed it, and then proceeded to walk away, unamused.

Chance, on the other hand, will take any stuffed toy he is given and immediately rip it to shreds.

But when it comes to similarities, I have noticed that the presence of a cat or a dog in your lap is equally pleasant. And I have noticed both cats and dogs giving me affection when I have felt blue or under the weather. So in a world of "cat people" and "dog people," I consider myself both.•
