It’s a big week for Denison’s favorite sons.

Earlier this week marked the fifth anniversary of the day that pilot Chesley B. Sullenberger III maneuvered a plane of 155 souls to a safe, emergency landing on the Hudson River. The Denison-born pilot and DHS graduate was honored by a New York City parade and a standing ovation at the Super Bowl, among other recognitions. But before Sullenberger, President and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower spent the first few months of his life in Denison.

Friday marks the day he said farewell to the American people as president. In a nationally televised speech on Jan. 17, 1961, Eisenhower warned "against the unfettered growth of the ‘military-industrial complex,’ as he coined it, and call(ed) for diplomacy, restraint and compassion in dealing with future crises with the Soviet Union," says history.com.

As he finished his speech he offered a prayer. It’s one that I think we should all pray again today. We still have a ways to go to fulfill it.

"We pray that peoples of all faiths, all races, all nations, may have their great human needs satisfied; that those now denied opportunity shall come to enjoy it to the full; that all who yearn for freedom may experience its spiritual blessings; that those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibilities; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; that the scourges of poverty, disease and ignorance will be made to disappear from the earth, and that, in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love."
