Now that we have battled through the holiday season from Thanksgiving through New Year’s, we face a considerable shortage of days worthy of a good celebration. Save for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 15, the calendar is pretty bare until Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14. As part of our never ending effort to provide important information to our readers, I compiled this list of days you can celebrate over the next six weeks or so if you need a holiday fix.
Alas, it is too late for National Bean Day, which was on Jan. 6, but here are some days you can still catch.
Jan. 14 — Defenders of the Motherland in Uzbekistan.
Jan. 15 — Blue Monday. (Some academic with time on his hands and government grant has figured out that this is the most depressing day of the year. You can look it up.)
Jan. 15 — On the other hand, it is also National Hat Day.
Jan. 18 — Winnie the Pooh Day.
Jan. 20 — Daylight Saving Time ends in Fiji. (More time to loll about the South seas Paradise — like they need it.)
Jan. 21 — National Hug Day.
Jan. 23 — National Handwriting Day. (I am ready for this as I collect vintage fountain pens.)
Jan. 23 — National Pie Day. (Here is something you can sink your teeth into. And to think, all this time I thought every day was Pie Day.)
Jan. 24 — National Compliment Day. (My goodness that was good pie.)
Jan. 24 — National Peanut Butter Day. (My mother used to put butter on the sandwiches so the peanut butter would not stick to the roof of your mouth. Has anyone else tried that?)
Jan. 28 — Fun at Work Day. (If you have a jolly topper left over from Hat Day, you could wear it to work.)
Jan. 29 — W.C. Fields birthday. (Enough said.)
Rounding into Feb. we have:
Feb. 2 — Wear Red to Work Day.
Feb. 3 — Thaipoosan Cavadee. (This is a holiday in Mauritius. I do not know what it is, but if you can pronounce it, you can celebrate it.)
Feb. 5 — World Nutella Day.
Feb. 9 — National Bagel Day.
Feb. 9 — National Pizza Day. (If you think you are up to it, you could combine the last three days into one and have a Nutella on a Bagel Pizza Day. If so, you are a better man than I am Gunga Din.)
Feb.13 — World Radio Day. (I do not know about you, but I will be listening to “Your’s Truly, Johnny Dollar,” “Fibber McGee and Molly,” and “Jack Benny” to celebrate.
Happy birthday to T.A. Tredway of Sherman; David Wesley Wright of Denison; and Brenda Anderson of Liberty Hill.
Happy anniversary to James and Loretta Swindle, 56 years; Bobby and Rosemary Householder of Denison, 50 years.
