Earlier this month, developers in Denison made news when they announced not one but two entertainment complexes would be coming to Denison in the near future. While I have my concerns about these two businesses competing over the same small market, I ultimately think this will be a boon for the city and young families alike.
On Sept. 6, representatives with Schulman’s Movie Bowl Grille announced plans to build a facility at the intersection of Crawford Street and U.S. Highway 75. The new facility will feature bowling, laser tag and and an eight-screen movie theater.
Not to be out done, officials with the city and Norman-based Heyday Entertainment announced plans two days later to build a similar facility in Gateway Village. The 50,000-square-foot facility will also feature bowling but will also have a 18-hole mini-golf course and a ropes course.
At first when I heard about these developments, I didn’t think much of it beyond the economics of it. Any way you look at it, this could be a major economic engine for the city, especially when talks of a movie theater are on the table. A development like either of these can easily bring in symbiotic developments around it.
I didn’t think much beyond that as I don’t consider myself a part of the target market. I don’t consider myself a bowler, and I am more of a homebody than I should be. As I continued to think about it, however, I realized I probably am in that target market.
As a young adult, who could be starting a family of my own in the next few years, both of the developments offer something family friendly to do in Texoma. I know it might be an unpopular opinion with some, but at times it feels like the entertainment options, especially those for children, can be limited in our area.
With both of these developments, it not only offers something for the younger crowd to do, but it fits that within a shell of family entertainment with options that can appeal to the whole family. And it is because of that factor that I think one, or both, of these developments will thrive in Denison.
Happy birthday to Casey McKinney, Tamara Rucker and Daisy Griffin, all of Sherman; R.D. Patterson Jr. and Raquel Butler both of Denison; Floyd Rolen of Savoy; Austen Barnes of Trenton; and Meredith Bench of Farmersville.
Happy anniversary to R.D. and Cynthia Patterson of Denison, 17 years.
