Growing up, I remember the distinct feeling of dread would start to slowly wash over me as the calendar flipped to the month of August. Summer was nearly over and the school year was approaching.

My procrastination of the required summer reading would catch up with me and keep me from all the fun and freedom I binged on. I remember the madness of the tax free weekend and the rush to get new clothes and especially school supplies, which only end up disappearing into the abysses of my locker.

But, in my case, the official death blow to my summer vacation was always dealt by the arrival of student orientation and schedule pick up. I remember reluctantly walking into the school and seeing classmates and being surprised at how different we all looked.

After about a week back, hopefully all our local students have settled back into their school routines.

Now they’re dealing with learning about their new teachers and finding out when they can meet up with their friends. The powers that be always seemed to take satisfaction in giving me a locker that was as inconveniently placed as any could possibly be.

School just started, but I’m sure some students are already counting down to summer vacation.
