The most exciting part of Sherman’s and Denison’s free summer concert series, for me, has been the fact that they’ve given us the opportunity to interview the performers for our weekend entertainment section The WeekEnd. Our Lifestyles and Entertainment Editor Future Brown and I have been working for weeks to put together interviews with each of the performers for Sherman’s Hot Summer Nights and Denison’s Music on Main shows, but they haven’t all worked out.

We’ve had the opportunity to talk to most of the performers to preview their shows, but things like scheduling conflicts and busy schedules have prevented us for getting everyone. The biggest missed opportunity for me, was Blue Öyster Cult, who will be performing at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lucy Kidd-Key Park in Sherman.

As a huge music fan, I’m always excited to talk to someone who has the talent and ability to perform professionally, but of everyone who has played in the area over the past few years, Blue Öyster Cult is the only act who I’d previously had a CD from in my collection. So as cool as it was to talk to Foghat’s Roger Earl, Marshall Tucker Band’s Doug Gray and Three Dog Night’s Danny Hutton, I was really looking forward to speaking with Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser or Eric Bloom from Blue Öyster Cult.

However, it just didn’t work out.

I was still able to put together an article previewing the show in today’s The WeekEnd, but I’ll have to continue hoping I get the opportunity to ask about the creation of “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” “Burnin’ For You” and their other classics.

But as much fun as it was to talk to the people I’ve heard on the radio, I also had great interviews with some artists I wasn’t too familiar with, like Rick Trevino and Trout Fishing In America’s Keith Grimwood. All the artists I had the opportunity to speak with were very generous with their time and had interesting things to say.

Work has prevented me from attending all the free concerts, but it’s been clear the attendees have had as good a time watching the shows as we did writing about them.

Happy birthday Friday to Betty Moore Phea, Lavona Wright, Sam Mullins, Pam Howeth, Sheila Worthington, Walt Buckner and Monica Moran, all of Sherman; Andy Davis of Denison; Destiny Rido of Friendswood; and Darlene Lyles of Ivanhoe.
