Some residents and former residents of Whitesboro might find a familiar name in Texas Monthly’s 2017 Top 50 BBQ Map and story. Bill Dumas, a 1986 graduate of WHS, is listed as a pitmaster in the section on Stiles Switch, which opened in 2011.

Dumas, who served in the Marines right out of high school, said it was “a trip” to be in the magazine for living his dream and passion.

Dumas, many may recall, lived with his family in an old Victorian home across the street from the First Baptist Church there in Whitesboro. He and his parents, Julie and French, shared the home with his sisters Theresa, Lisa, Marlalee, Katrina, Sara and Erin. If memory serves me, the family also had an ostrich and a giant dog. Bill says the dog’s name was Mocha.

I remember that he got loose a lot.

At Stiles Switch, located at 6610 N. Lamar Blvd. in Austin, Dumas cooks everything from the ribs to boudin balls. Barbecue is a big deal in Austin right now and it seems like a new place opens up there almost every week. I can’t imagine what it must take to make such a big splash in that pool that Texas Monthly notices, so my hat is off to Dumas and the rest of the folks at Stiles Switch.

And while I am talking about locals who have been named to things in other parts of the state, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Charla Glass Aldous who was recently named 2017 Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Dallas Bar Association.

“I consider myself very fortunate,” Aldous said in her interview with the Dallas Bar Association. “I’ve been able to make a living, support my family, all while helping people. I am very fortunate.”

Aldous, who grew up in Sherman, said in promotional material for the Bar that she likes to fight for the underdog. Aldous attended Grayson College before transferring to Austin College in Sherman. From there she went to Southern Methodist University School of Law where she graduated in 1985. She has won hundreds of millions of dollars in verdicts for her clients over the years and recently represented a high school student against the Lewisville Independent School District in the federal district court in Sherman.
