Each regular session, the Texas Legislature is privileged to honor a Texas hero. with the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor. The Texas Legislative Medal of Honor is awarded to a member of the state or federal military forces who voluntarily performs a deed of personal bravery or self-sacrifice involving risk of life that is so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the service member for gallantry and intrepidity above the service member’s comrades.

The Nominating Committee is led by the Chairs of the House Defense & Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the Senate Veteran Affairs and Military Instillations and includes the Adjutant General or designated representative. The committee considers proposed candidates by colleagues in the House and Senate on the standard of extraordinary merit. Thereafter, a person will be nominated by the majority vote of all members of the Nominating Committee. The Legislature will then direct the Governor by concurrent resolution to award the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to the final nominee. The nominee for this year’s Legislative Medal of Honor is Master Sergeant Travis Watkins for his remarkable service in the Korean War. House Concurrent Resolution 122 will be read before the full House in a few weeks when the Legislature has its memorial day ceremonies.
